It’s the new year and most people like speaking about how they would like to start a side hustle but the majority of them never do because they keep making excuses. The biggest excuse is “I don’t know what to do”. So today I bring you ideas of side hustle that you can start to supplement your income, or you can do these on a full-time basis and have a business.

A lot of these are skill based but not so difficult that you are not able to practice and learn in a few months, enough to be able to start a business in no time. YouTube is the one place to learn whatever it is that you want and a lot of people with small businesses actually learnt their skills from YouTube. With each, I will link a youtube video you can watch just in case you are interested. Please note that you don’t have to watch all the videos, just the ones with the business that interests you.

Social media is your best friend when it comes to marketing your business.

  1. Photography

Not saying you can become a professional photographer by YouTube videos in a few months but you can still manage to learn and within a few months of intense practice, you should be good enough. I have seen a lot of self-taught photographers and you would not believe how good they are at their craft, and all they did was practice and commit to photography.

  1. Makeup

Makeup is by far the most overpopulated genre on YouTube so you don’t really have an excuse not to learn. If you enjoy everything make up then all it takes is binge-watching a lot of makeup videos and PRACTICE. A lot of big makeup artists these days are self-taught through YouTube so not being certified is not a big deal.

Makeup is very profitable. With enough practice, you can find yourself getting a lot of bookings and making a lot of money through it.

  1. Making wigs/ Braiding Hair

Braiding hair is not as easy as watching YouTube videos because believe me I have done that and I’m able to braid hair, but it doesn’t look as beautiful like when a pro does it. This brings us back to the topic of practicing all these things and eventually you get better and better.

With making wigs, I can’t comment much but it seems like something you can master in a few weeks, and it’s not hard labor like braiding hair.

  1. Doing nails

If you are a fan of nails then this will be such an easy and low budget business to start. Nail equipment is affordable and almost every girl knows how to apply nail polish.

All you need is a UV Lamp (R350), Gel Nail Polishes (R145 each), Nail Tips (R45 for 100 nails), Cuticle pusher, cuticle oil and a nail filer (R7). (All available at Signature Cosmetics)

You can then start doing people’s nails and making money really quick. A lot of ladies cannot go without beautiful looking nails so if you give good service at a good price, customers are guaranteed.

  1. Blogging/ Influencer

This is the one that is a bit more difficult because becoming an influencer takes a lot of time and consistency, and people have to like the content you are posting. Blogging is even worse because not everyone is a writer, and to be a writer you must at least enjoy the craft a bit.

This side hustle is not for everyone. You have to be willing to work hard to be noticed and to get traffic (believe me, I know how difficult getting traffic is), and you will wait a while before you start making money from it.

Not to say it’s easier to do the other things like make up and photography, but with those as long as you have skill and a bit of following, you get bookings. With blogging nothing is really guaranteed because your income depends on whether brands like you. It’s a tough industry so if you don’t like it, you won’t last because the money doesn’t come quickly.

  1. YouTube

If you like talking and filming then YouTube is for you. It’s obviously not as easily as it seems to be when you watch the videos but it could be a good side hustle. You also have to do a lot of research before you jump onto the bandwagon, but not too much that you end up spending all year on research.

  1. Selling Avon/Tupperware

Not my favorite but some people don’t mind being salespeople all the time. It’s very self-explanatory so I’m not going to get into it much since I’m not well informed on it. The people who do it do say that it’s very profitable as a side.

  1. Doing promos

I have seen a lot of people with a big following on social media doing promos, whether it’s club promotions or promoting an app. The way the promoters are dedicated it looks like good money, so if you have a good following you might as well give it a shot. You have nothing to lose

  1. Programming

For all the tech savvy people, this is a good gig for you. You can learn programming on Codecademy and after a few months you could be getting clients that want their websites professionally done.

  1. Baking and Cooking

If this is your passion then it should be easy enough to make and sell cooked food and baked goods. People are always looking for good cookies so make sure you are that person

My emphasis on all of these: Do it if you like it. There is nothing worse than doing something you really hate because of money. At least like it a bit.

In this day and age where all the information we need is at our fingertips, I feel we have no excuse. Yes some may argue that there are problems such as getting funding but most of the side hustles mentioned here don’t need a huge budget to start, only Photography and Makeup do.

It’s all up to you if you are serious about making more money in 2018, and if you are you will start today.
